SPRING FAMILY NATURE WALKS
As the snow melts and signs of spring are upon us, I encourage you and your family to join your friends and neighbors on one (or all) of our fun, family nature walks! During theses walks we will discover the first signs of spring, how many gallons of sap it takes to make one gallon of pure maple syrup, what is a spring peeper and much more! Families should dress for the weather and light hiking. These walks will take place at Lake Grubb Nature Park in West Hempfield Township. SUSQUEHANNA STORIES
Shank's Mare's dining & learning programs feature guest speakers offering a range of subjects mostly geared to the Susquehanna River's ecological features, historic places, and the interesting people who have made their homes here for centuries. The programs begin with a delicious dinner in The Rookery followed by the presentation during dessert and coffee. Reserve a table for friends or family, or come on your own. There's always something interesting to hear as we unfold the wealth of Susquehanna Stories.
THE SUSQUEHANNA INDIANS MEET THE FIRST EUROPEANS
Featuring Stephen Runkle Imagine the dynamics of that first meeting between the Native Americans and the early Europeans. Stephen Runkle will bring those meetings to life during this fascinating presentation. You'll hear about the exploration and early settlement of the Lower Susquehanna along with the competition and confrontations of the various European and Native Americans. Learn about the appearance
and dress of the area Native Americans, and meet European personalities including Captain John Smith, Pocahontas, William and Thomas Penn, Conrad Weiser, and Shickellamy to name a few. Listen to Iroquois songs and get ready for a colorful presentation on this 17th and
18th century time period.

NATIVE AMERICAN LANGUAGES AND SUSQUEHANNA PLACENAMES
Featuring Charles (Chip) Kauffman What did the Native American language sound like as it was spoken in and around the Susquehanna River? Welcome Chip Kauffman as he introduces us to an appreciation for the history, complexity, and rich tapestry of American Indian languages and how they influenced American life and culture. Learn some expressions in dozens of American Indian dialects including Navajo, Cheyenne, Cherokee, and the Iroquoian language of the Susquehannock. Then our talk will focus on how many places in York & Lancaster counties got their names.

THE CIVIL WAR COMES TO WRIGHTSVILLE
Featuring Scott Mingus, Sr. Welcome local author and historian Scott Mingus, Sr. for his Civil War presentation based on his book "Flames beyond Gettysburg - The Confederate Expedition to the Susquehanna River, June 1863". We'll hear about the Confederates mission to seize the vital Susquehanna River Bridge between Wrightsville and Columbia. We'll also learn about the capture and ransom of York, and the activities around the railroads and Hanover Junction. This important story will help us realize the vital part our area and its residents played in a turning point of the war. To further your experience, sign up for our Civil War hike led by Scott on Sat., March 3, 2012.

HIKE & HOT LUNCH SERIES
Shank's Mare's fall, winter and spring hiking series will take you on some invigorating treks in the river hills ... and we hope will give you new information on this special place we call home. Spend a morning outdoors hiking, and end your adventure back at Shank's Mare with a hearty hot soup and sandwich lunch.
SUSQUEHANNA INDIAN VILLAGE HIKE WITH JAN KLINEDINST
Local resident and archaeologist Jan Klinedinst has long been studying the numerous Native American sites along the Lower Susquehanna. She will help us lead our Indian hike on the Native Lands Trail portion of the Mason-Dixon Trail. We will visit the sites of our "Andastes" villages and other prehistoric and historic settlements along the Susquehanna. This will be a fascinating hike retracing the steps of those who occupied the river hills centuries before us.

CIVIL WAR COMES TO WRIGHTSVILLE HIKE
with Scott Mingus, Sr. Area Civil War historian Scott Mingus, Sr. will expand on his Feb. 17th Evening Rendezvous program at Shank's Mare, with a guided hike through the borough of Wrightsville. We will re-trace the movements of the Confederate troops as they approach the borough along with the placements of the Union soldiers as they guard the strategic bridge over the Susquehanna River. This hike will give you first hand glimpses on the activities just prior to the burning of the Wrightsville Bridge and the Battle of Gettysburg. What a great opportunity to appreciate the history that lies right in our own backyard!
